Annette Oevermann writes – “SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 3, 2002 — MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that its flagship product, MontaVistaâ„¢ Linux Professional Edition 2.1, will support the new Intel® IXC1100 control plane processor.

The IXC1100 control plane processor is a highly integrated system-on-a-chip designed for use in next-generation telecommunication equipment such as multi-service switches, VoIP media gateways, and wireless infrastructure. By combining the high performance and extremely low power consumption of an Intel® XScale™ core with a rich suite of interconnects, the Intel IXC1100 control plane processor provides the performance and headroom to handle a variety of compute-intensive tasks involving deep packet inspection on line cards and blades.

“The combination of the Intel IXC1100 processor and MontaVista Linux offers telecommunications equipment manufacturers (TEMs) greater design flexibility and faster time to market, †said Doug Davis, general manager of Intel’s Network Processing Division. “MontaVista Software’s expertise in embedded Linux and the company’s extensive experience in the telecommunications market make MontaVista Linux a natural complement for Intel’s new control plane processor.â€

MontaVista™ Linux® Professional Edition 2.1 is the next generation of the company’s classic and award winning embedded OS platform. It includes cross development tools and native tool chains for local development, along with extensive real-time features, including enhanced kernel preemption technology. The feature-rich release enables a wide variety of embedded applications, providing a standard platform for designs from communications infrastructure to connected consumer electronic devices.

“A robust embedded operating system such as MontaVista Linux can take advantage of Intel’s new powerful, highly integrated processor,†said Sheila Baker, vice president, Marketing, MontaVista Software. “Together, MontaVista Software and Intel help TEMs meet growing customer demand for flexible network service provisioning capabilities at lower cost.â€
