SUNNYVALE, Calif., and SEOUL, July 10, 2003 — MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced the establishment of a MontaVista office in Korea. It will be headquartered in Seoul, and will market and support the full range of MontaVista products, including all editions of MontaVista Linux — Professional, Consumer Electronics and Carrier Grade — along with complementary technology products providing powerful Java and graphics development capabilities. MontaVista Korea will also provide front line technical support for local customers.

Founded in 1999 by real-time operating system (RTOS) pioneer James Ready, MontaVista Software is a leading global supplier of systems software for intelligent connected devices and associated infrastructure. MontaVista offers a family of products under the MontaVista Linux umbrella that address a broad array of software developer needs encompassing applications ranging from communications infrastructure to consumer electronics.

“After having set up a strong presence in North America and Europe, and establishing a solid foothold in Asia, in particular via our successful operation in Japan, we are now moving to the next frontier and expanding our base in the growing market of Asia-Pacific,” said Jim Ready, CEO and president of MontaVista Software. “We are bringing our world class products, services and support directly to Korea to serve the local embedded software developer community.”

The Venture Development Corporation (VDC) research group reports that the market for embedded Linux in Asia-Pacific currently makes up more than one third of the global market. VDC also indicates that Asia-Pacific demand for embedded Linux is expected to grow at an annual rate of 22 percent over the next five years, which makes it one of the fastest growing regions for embedded Linux.

“The telecommunications and consumer electronics industries in Korea are accelerating their migration of software platforms from proprietary OSes to Linux,” said S. Y. Kwon, general manager for MontaVista Korea. “Already, leading companies such as Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. are using MontaVista Linux for next-generation products. I am convinced that the MontaVista Linux family of products, which are known for their robustness and scalability, will satisfy an essential need for a growing number of companies in Korea.”

According to a recent Gartner Dataquest/EE Times survey of embedded developers, Linux (21.4 %), VxWorks (30.6%), and Windows CE (22.8%) are currently the most widely used real-time operating systems in embedded applications in Asia, with Linux usage expected to surpass Windows CE in the near future.

“We have very good representation in the Asia Pacific region – in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan and India. Linux is rapidly gaining popularity in Korea and MontaVista Software is responding to address the growing market demand with direct local presence,” said Raymond Mak, vice president of Asia Pacific Sales for MontaVista Software. “Our success in recruiting top-notch development and support engineers as well as talented sales and marketing professionals in Korea, will enable MontaVista to deliver superior technology, support and services,” he added.
