A SMARTPHONE can be simply defined as a mobile phone with the added capabilities of a handheld computer. Such phones are generally powered by the
Palm, Symbian or PocketPC operating system (OS), like their palmtop computer cousins.

Recently, key players in the mobile phone industry announced that they are evaluating a fourth OS for their products the hugely popular open-sourced
Linux, which requires no licence to use and is just as well supported.

However, cellphone maker Motorola claims it is steps ahead of the pack because its first Linux-powered cellphone the A760 is already being sold, in
Asia.
