New Book on Drupal 4.7 Supports Project

Douglas Paterson writes “A new book on the popular open source Content Management System, Drupal, has been released today by today by UK publishing company Packt. In an additional move designed to help support Drupal, Packt is paying a percentage of all book sales directly to the project.

Based on PHP/MySQL, Drupal’s power and flexibility, combined with its exceptional design, mean it is already on the way to becoming the de facto standard for CMS Websites. Drupal’s power means choosing an initial pathway can be daunting. Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites is designed to smooth the process by taking readers from initial set up through site design and creation in a series of carefully structured steps.

As both an experienced programmer and professional author David Mercer is perfectly positioned to write on the book. Mercer balances his time between programming, reviewing and writing and has high praise for the CMS. “I would not hesitate to recommend Drupal as the tool of choice for anyone wishing to have their own web presence. I also hope that my book will prove to be an invaluable tool for a whole new generation of people switching on to Drupal,” he says.

As an open source project, Drupal is free to download. This means that it survives through volunteers and donations from an enthusiastic community. In a move designed to demonstrate their support and to help provide a sustainable source of revenue for the project, Packt is paying Drupal a percentage of every book sold. “This is something we do for all open source projects that we publish books on” explains Packt spokesman Damian Carvill. Carvill goes on to state that Packt’s aim is to “establish publishing royalties as an essential part of the service and support business model that sustains Open Source.”
