MOUNTAIN VIEW and SUNNYVALE, Calif. – September 16, 2003 – NextHop Technologies® Inc., the definitive source for network routing software solutions, and MontaVista Software, the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that NextHop GateD® routing source code will add support for the MontaVista® Linux® Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) operating system (OS) and development environment.

This combination now gives telecommunications equipment manufacturers and network equipment providers (TEMs and NEPs) in multiple market segments, ranging from the service provider core, metropolitan and edge, Asia-Pacific OEMs/ODMs (original equipment manufacturers/original designers and manufacturers) to enterprise networks, SOHO (small office/home office) and security appliances, a high-end, pre-tested routing solution on a carrier-grade version of Linux.

“We are excited to be working with MontaVista Software and truly pleased to be able to meet customers’ demands with a solid, pre-tested, easy-to-integrate, `OS plus routing’ joint solution for carrier-grade applications,” states Dennis Tsu, vice president marketing and sales for NextHop. “Understanding the needs of the industry and providing the best routing solutions for network equipment manufacturers is a critical requirement for next-generation networks and continues to be NextHop’s mission.”

With its real-time Linux performance and high availability features, CGE offers significant advantages for TEMs and NEPs beyond “enterprise” Linux. MontaVista Software’s carrier-grade Linux operating system combines the leading technological advancements of Linux with robust carrier-class features to create the most advanced open standards-based carrier-grade platform available.

“Having GateD as a robust routing software solution for MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition helps us empower network equipment vendors that are increasingly looking for Linux-based solutions to get their products to market quickly,” states Sheila Baker, vice president, marketing, MontaVista Software. “This combination will definitely provide them with solid state-of-the-art technology that is easy to develop, install and use.”

About MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition

MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition provides a robust software platform to meet the demands of carriers and service providers. CGE is the first product to be fully compliant with the industry specification for Carrier Grade Linux released last year by the Open Source Development Lab – the OSDL Carrier Grade Linux Specification 1.1. The specification includes standards such as the Linux Standards Base (LSB), IPv6 (including IPSECv6 and MIPv6), SNMP support, and POSIX interfaces for timers, signals, message queues, semaphores, event logging and threads.

CGE is based on an open architecture, incorporating standard interfaces that provide greater flexibility and portability. CGE 3.0 supports multiple hardware solutions based on CompactPCI and volume-based rackmount servers.
About GateD Routing Software

With more than 16 years of deployment, GateD is the most stable, fully functional, and widely used routing protocol in the world. NextHop offers three GateD product lines: GateD Enterprise 2.x routing software, GateD 10.2 routing software, and GateD NGC 2.x routing and MPLS/VPN (multi-protocol label switching/virtual private network) software.

GateD Enterprise is an off-the-shelf software package that transforms servers into secure, reliable routing platforms.

GateD 10.2 routing software is licensed as source code to developers building network equipment. GateD is renowned for its performance, scalability, reliability, and breadth of deployment on the Internet. It is the first Internet protocol (IP) routing source code product with two management interfaces, an XML Routing API (application-programming interface) and a CLI (command line interface), as well as OPSEC(TM) (Open Platform for Security) certification from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. GateD has become the de-facto standard for routing software over the last 16 years.

GateD® NGC (Next Generation Carrier) builds on the GateD core technology adding MPLS, RSVP, LDP, virtual routing, and 2547/VPN capabilities to meet the needs of high-capacity, multi-service routing platforms and is designed specifically to meet the challenging needs of network equipment manufacturers in the service provider core, metro and edge markets.

Pricing and Availability

Available now, GateD routing software comes in several packages.

CGE is available from MontaVista Software and the company’s sales and distribution channels worldwide. It is offered as a product subscription, providing customers with the MontaVista Linux kernel, all software updates, deployment components, utilities, development tools, access to the MontaVista Zone (customer resource portal), comprehensive technical support and hands-on Linux training classes.
