Dev Mazumdar writes “Open Sound System v4.0 has been finally announced. This is the first major update since OSS v3 was announced in 1996. The new virtual mixer driver in OSS allows you to view DVDs in 5.1 surround sound and simultaneously carry on a full duplex VOIP conversation, run a game like DoomIII and also listen to stereo audio – all of these tasks can be done transparently and without having to learn any cryptic audio configuration syntax used by audio systems such as ALSA.”
