Kelly McNeill writes “A better way to counteract Microsoft’s dot-doc file dominance is to introduce a new standard of our own and make it stick by leveraging the current strengths we have in open-source software, similar to the way in which Microsoft does. To make a new standard stick, we must make it show up everywhere. For example, the people working on Mozilla should work with the OpenOffice to develop OpenOffice enabled versions of Mozilla. I’m not talking about a plug-in like Adobe Acrobat, but instead about full read and display compatibility. Like HTML.”
