Matt Asay looks at proprietary vendors’ responses to competition from open source software. “It will take a long, long time for these companies to dwindle, but they will. Maintenance contracts will slowly peter out over 5-10 years; customers will hang on as long as they possibly can. And then the vendor will capitulate to open source – far too late – or die fighting it.”
