Is open source heading for an effective monopoly?

Lajos Moczar writes “Last month I wrote an article for JavaWorld in which I stated that Apache Geronimo hoped to be the first Sun-certified open-source J2EE server. This generated a bit of controversy and a response from JBoss. To address the question more fully, I have just published a follow-up paper, “The Open Source Monopoly”. The article looks at where the commercial open source model is going and how open source is less a revolution of the technology industry and more simply a new generation of brand names. It points out that without proper attention to true business needs, we will end up with an effective monopoly on the part of a few commerical open source companies.”
