“I was working on it for kicks,” Haller recalls. Two years later, thanks to him and a lot of other volunteers, the old Microsoft paradigm of immovable software has been obliterated. Haller runs a nifty, mildly geeky site – www.portableapps.com – which offers versions of all the big names in open source as “Portable Apps” ready for download. (The site, alas, has been overwhelmed on several occasions by eager downloaders who now number more than 500,000.)
