Data storage system maker Xiotech Corp. has ditched its proprietary hardware platform and the employees to support it in a cost-cutting effort to reach its goal of achieving profitability this year. Trade and mainstream press reported Friday the Eden Prairie company has cut as many as one-quarter of its work force or 100 workers, but Xiotech executive vice president of marketing Mike Stolz would not comment on the number of layoffs. Nine-year-old Xiotech has 300 employees, Stolz said. Xiotech will use Intel motherboards and Linux open-source software platform to build its new storage systems, freeing more resources to build software applications, Stolz said.
