“Notice anything different?” asked “Pops” Kringle, as we walked through the front hall of the North Pole Toy Works — where he wore a number of hats including both CEO and CTO — during my annual visit.

The spaces on and in front of the ice-white walls were liberally festooned with a mix of sample items and dozens of plasma-screen display kiosks, plus several intriguing displays that seemed to be 3D even though I wasn’t wearing any special glasses.

“Um, the ‘Buy Me Now’ icons? The Harry Potter spectacles on that reindeer display?”

“Those too, but I’m talking about the lighting.”

I looked up and around. “It looks very natural … oh, you mean …”

“That’s right. No Windows!”
