Security starts within: FBI arrest at Microsoft

10
Chuck Talk writes “In a rather telling coincidence, a Microsoft employee has been arrested for cracking into search rival Alta Vista’s computer systems. The FBI apparently arrested the Redmond, Washington company employee a couple of weeks ago for the alleged criminal intrusion.

The arrest was widely reported, and searching Alta Vista’s search engine with “Microsoft Hacker” does bring several articles up on the arrest. Although the term should be “cracker”, the fact is that the public have got the meaning of hack all wrong, and thanks to the illiterate press, the term hacker has become synonymous with a person who breaks into computers (I know – that is not the meaning of the word).”
