Shared file systems, SANs, and security

Not long ago one of my firm’s customers was looking at the security issues surrounding a WAN connection to a shared file system. The system included
three different types of servers, two different types of host bus adapters (HBA), dual redundant Fibre Channel switches, terabytes of RAID storage,
and metadata communication over IP using three different Gigabit Ethernet NICs. A hierarchical storage management (HSM) system controlled the system’s
high performance tape drives, migrating data to and from large tape robots.
