Kelly McNeill of OSOpinion writes: “Ximian’s going to produce its own version of .NET — and theirs will be available free of charge to all comers. Ximian is best known for its Gnome software, a popular set of programs that gives the complex Linux operating system an easy, Windows-like look and feel. The new Ximian software initiative, code- named “Mono,” may be the most interesting showdown yet between the traditional software industry, which makes money by keeping the contents of its code secret, and “open source” companies like Ximian, which publish their raw source code and encourage outsiders to copy and modify it.”
