BILLIONAIRE Mark Shuttleworth has pledged R4m to promote the use of open-source software in SA as a cheaper alternative to the costly big-name brands. His donation is being matched by R4m from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and R4m from Hewlett-Packard over the next two years.

Another R6m will be donated by the Shuttleworth Foundation, the organisation he founded, to promote open-source software.
