SnapGear to Collaborate with Red Hat

19
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – SnapGear Inc., a leading supplier of Internet security solutions, announced that the company is collaborating with Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq:RHAT) to offer customers complete hardware and software embedded solutions that bring together the stability of embedded Linux with experienced hardware design, manufacturing and fulfillment.

The arrangement gives customers a one-stop location for realising integrated hardware solutions. At present, companies seeking to build in-house solutions are daunted by the expense and risk of building themselves. Some design houses offer integrated design solutions but generally pursue an approach that locks a customer into a proprietary operating system weighted down by large royalties. Basing product development upon Linux and open source technology provides a much lower entry cost.

Recent surveys show that embedded Linux is moving into first place in 2002 for embedded application development. Reasons cited include high stability, code maturity, an abundance of ready-made application code, and a simplified licensing model.

Red Hat VP of Global Services Tony Moretto said: “When you bring together Red Hat’s knowledge of embedded Linux operating systems and ability to provide end-to-end services and support with Snap Gear’s embedded hardware experience, you have a winning formula. Customers not only still have a single point of contact, but now have access to everything they need, from project conceptualisation to product delivery.”

President of SnapGear Inc., USA Peter Cronk said: “We’ve been involved with embedded Linux for several years and our kernel engineers have made large contributions to the deeply embedded space, which entirely complements Red Hat Linux. But a larger part of our business has been quietly providing OEM solutions for major USA and European telecommunications companies. We’ve built an impressive track record in design services, prototyping, manufacturing at our ISO9002 facility, and global fulfillment operations. The missing piece of the puzzle for us has been the ability to offer large scale professional services, which Red Hat now provides.”

Both companies have a global presence and the ability to deliver solutions on the ground in any geographic area but take advantage of specialist development teams located worldwide.
