At Uniweld Products Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Weyland Smith, systems administrator, started delving into the options available when the company needed new computer services, including an in-house mail server, about a year and a half ago.

His decision after two months of “solid investigation” was to install an open source operating system known as Linux, despite the trepidation of management about moving from the more-traditional Windows environment.
