BILL GATES once called it a communist movement within the software industry. Software giants including Gates’ Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. have tried to quash it. But the “open source” software movement is nonetheless alive and well. Lately, this once radical mode of developing and using software has even become mainstream.
