Answer: Damaged Word documents are tough because of the proprietary format and because Word thinks it knows better than you. If it runs into just about any little error, it stops.
First, try opening the document in OpenOffice.org. OOo is a free office suite, with all the same capabilities of Microsoft Office. You can have both OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office on the same system.
