technobeast: How was the idea for Skype brought to you?
Niklas Zennstrom: Janus Friis and I were co-founders of Kazaa, the peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing technology and the most downloaded software in the history of the Internet. The success of Kazaa made us ask where we could use P2P technology to solve real world problems. We realised that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) was something that had been around for 10 years but had not really worked that well. We decided to develop a product based on P2P technology that would bring high quality voice calling to people around the world.
