news of SCO saying “GPL is void and Linux is an unauthorized reprodution of UNIX created to destroy proprietaty O.S. software hit the streets, one has to wonder what SCO partners, many of them among the so called Linux defenders, had to say. So, I took the task of contacting Conectiva, a largest Linux distributior in Latin America, and former employer of Marcelo Tossati, about these news.
Conectiva has, in the past, posted a very light
statement (in Portuguese, sorry. Try google) about the SCO x IBM matter. Of course, with the recent developents of the issue make this statement somewhat obsolete. I mean, what does it mean when one says “Linux kernel is GPL, so we have nothing to worry”, when SCO says “GPL is void” ? So I’ve sent an e-mail (quoted bellow, in portuguese again, sorry) questioning then about a new statement on this issue. The main reasons I felt we needed this statement is that they are a SCO partner, and they are members, together with SCO, of the United Linux initiative. Not to mention the fact that there are a few kernel developers working there.
Well, I was ready to wait for about a week for an answer. I mean, I did have to study what the news was about, to think about the issue, and only then reply. But what I got, in less then 24 hours, if a very simple answer, saying “We have nothing to declare on this issue”. That is not what I hopped. Maybe it is time for us to start thinking about using products and our relationship with SCO partners as well ?

Entretanto, com a divulgacão da resposta da SCO à IBM,
com data de 24/03/2003[2], a situação muda um pouco.
A SCO foi bem clara em suas declaração de que (tradução
livre) “A GPL não tem validade” e “O Linux uma VERSÃO
no autorizada do UNIX, criada para DESTRUIR um sistema
operacional proprietário”. Um resumo comentado[3] também
está disponÃvel, com os pontos principais destacados.
Voltando ao assunto do posicionamento[1] da Conectiva,
vemos que a Conectiva discorre sobre o processo contra
a IBM e sobre a questo do Linux ser ou não GPL. Nesses
pontos, acredito, nunca houve dúvidas. Porém, em vista
da recente prosicão da SCO[2], se faz necessário, ao meu
ver e de várias outras partes, que a Conectiva faça um
posicionamento não sobre o processo, mas sobre a postura
e argumentação da SCO.
Temos ainda o fato da Conectiva está, indiretamente, apoiando
a SCO, uma vez que as parcerias entre as empresas continuam,
além da Unitedlinux. Gostaria também de ressaltar um ponto
de ter sido informado, há alguns meses atrás, que a Conectiva
era parceira Caldera/SCO, representando as soluções da mesma
no Brasil. Entretanto, no pude encontrar nenhuma referência
oficial sobre este tema.
Finalmente, gostaria de enfatizar ser a Conectiva uma
empresa diretamente afetada por esta questão SCO x GPL e,
portanto, não podendo ficar sem um posicionamento sobre
a questão. Quando o ponto era SCO x IBM, a declaração
anterior[1] estava satisfatória. Porém, em vista das
mudanças de direção[2], esta não mais esclarece.
