IF excise duty (of 8 per cent) is to be levied on the price of all software that comes bundled with PC hardware, PCs would become marginally costlier.
Industry sources indicate that in the case of the Microsoft XP operating system for home users, which costs between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000, excise duty would come to nearly Rs 500. This is an extra cost that a consumer would have to bear.
