Reuters reports that Swedish telecom operator and Internet provider
Telia is planning to use the free Linux computer operating system for its
entire Internet services business TeliaNet.

“TeliaNet hopes switching to a Linux-based computer will enable it to
cut prices and increase reliability and availabilty of its Web service.”

The Register talks to Intel boss Craig Barrett. Barrett has this to say about competitor Transmeta: “If you go back to the mobile processor family where we compete
against people like Transmeta, we introduced the Pentium III processor family with
some speed step technology. You can scale down the performance and scale down
the power consumption. We think we outperformed Transmeta, both in performance
and in power consumption in the mobile end.”
