Don’t lose your butt in tech stocks

Author: JT Smith

OSOpinion: “Clearly, Apple and Intel knew before
the end of the quarter that their sales would be soft, but they gave little notice to analysts and
journalists. One reason is fear of new SEC regulations that prohibit playing ‘favorites’ —
companies can only disclose this sort of information to the public generally, rather than to
individual analysts.” Kelly McNeill

Encrypted IRC network debuts

Author: JT Smith

An anonymous reader writes: “One of the first encrypted IRC networks, SUIDNet, has debuted. SUIDNet features SSL encryption for server-to-server, server-to-client and client-to-client communications. In addition, all users who choose to connect unencrypted will have an “-insecure” appended to their hostname and be banned from all channels designated as SECURE. We are always looking for help and suggestions, including people willing to run IRC servers. For more information go to suidnet.org. If you would like to just look around, and do not mind that you are unencrypted then just set your IRC server to irc.suidnet.org:6667 and join #suid.”

Goodbye, Joel Klein (and good riddance)

Author: JT Smith

From OSOpinion: “Joel Klein’s talents have been misdirected. As a corporate lawyer or CEO — or, for that matter, as head of a university or a charitable foundation — he could use his skills and his passion to improve the general welfare. But, in filing an unwarranted lawsuit and pursuing it with typical Kleinian fervor he did enormous damage — not just to Microsoft itself, but to the entire high-technology sector, and to the economy. He has been, in short, a menace to the New Economy.Kelly McNeill

Opinion: Linux is a failure

Author: JT Smith

OSOpinion: “When I first began using Linux (an early Slackware distribution), I remember thinking that it was a good-but-not-great Unix. Six years later, that caveat still holds true: it’s a good-but-not-great Unix. But it happened that Linux became a lightning rod for many other forces in the industry: the rise of the Internet, the waning of Microsoft’s power and the emergence of the “appliance” computer. Add to this heady brew the whole “Open Source/Free Software” philosophy, lard it with lavish media attention, and what you have is a big billowing cloud of hot air with a tiny kernel (pun intended) at its center.” Kelly McNeill
