First Project Ara Modules Appear: Innolux Displays and Sennheiser Audio

The first modular smartphone kit to arrive under the Project Ara banner should be launched later this year. While we wait on the big occasion, we thought you’d like to know that developers are working on the modules that will actually let you achieve device customization.

And the first parts are in. Display maker Innolux has already unveiled a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 pixel Ltps display with 600 cd/m2 brightness plus a 1 mm / 0.03 inch border panel.

Chances are if you have a Haswell ultrabook/laptop, you’re probably not looking at upgrading to a new Broadwell design unless your Haswell laptop had hardware issues, you really need a longer battery life via more power efficient hardware, or you just fall in love with one of the new Broadwell devices. If you’re running an Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge laptop on the other hand, it might be time for an upgrade to get faster Intel graphics and greater power efficiency. David started working with the OpenDaylight Project a little over a year ago. He is involved with the discovery project, device identification and device management project, and the projects dealing with an intent interface. David has been working on network management solutions for over 20 years at various different companies in various states and joined Ciena Corporation in the San Jose area about the same time he got involved with the OpenDaylight Project

What is the biggest challenge facing networking today and how will SDN (and/or NFV) resolve it?

I think the industry is interested in being able to programmatically control their network regardless of the vendor or technology being used. Customers want to express a desire, i.e. connect A to Z with characteristics W, and have the “system” figure out how best to meet that desire given the existing and planned network state. This is the nirvana, but I think this is the problem that needs to be our focus. So often projects can get lost in the technology and lose sight of this goal.
