The first modular smartphone kit to arrive under the Project Ara banner should be launched later this year. While we wait on the big occasion, we thought you’d like to know that developers are working on the modules that will actually let you achieve device customization.

And the first parts are in. Display maker Innolux has already unveiled a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 pixel Ltps display with 600 cd/m2 brightness plus a 1 mm / 0.03 inch border panel.

Preliminary Tests Of Intel Sandy Bridge & Ivy Bridge vs. Broadwell

Chances are if you have a Haswell ultrabook/laptop, you’re probably not looking at upgrading to a new Broadwell design unless your Haswell laptop had hardware issues, you really need a longer battery life via more power efficient hardware, or you just fall in love with one of the new Broadwell devices. If you’re running an Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge laptop on the other hand, it might be time for an upgrade to get faster Intel graphics and greater power efficiency. Here’s some preliminary figures I have for showing off the new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Core i7 5600U compared to some older SNB and IVB laptops.

Why Now is the Time to Learn R

Open Source
Careers

A collection of articles about jobs and careers in open source.

We’ve all heard about big data; over the past few years, many companies have invested in Hadoop, NoSQL, and data warehouses, to collect and store massive volumes of new data. Even when based on open source platforms like Hadoop, these investments can easily measure in the millions of dollars for large companies with new hardware, new staff, and untold person-hours spent implementing new systems and procedures.

Now it’s time for that investment to pay off.

Canonical Reveals the Hardware Specs of the Ubuntu Aquarius E4.5 Phone

Canonical has revealed the specs for the Aquarius E4.5 phone that will launch with Ubuntu Touch, although they were not exactly a state secret.

Information about the launch of the Ubuntu-powered Bq Aquarius E4.5 phone in February was made public only a month ago, so it’s not really a secret what phones will be used by the Spanish partners at Canonical. Meizu, the partners from China, have been much more secretive and it’s likely that they will wait until the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona… (read more)

OpenDaylight Developer Spotlight: David Bainbridge

The OpenDaylight community is comprised of leading technologists from around the globe who are working together to transform networking with open source. This blog series highlights the developers, users and researchers collaborating within OpenDaylight to build an open, common platform for SDN and NFV.

David BainbridgeAbout David Bainbridge

David started working with the OpenDaylight Project a little over a year ago. He is involved with the discovery project, device identification and device management project, and the projects dealing with an intent interface. David has been working on network management solutions for over 20 years at various different companies in various states and joined Ciena Corporation in the San Jose area about the same time he got involved with the OpenDaylight Project

What is the biggest challenge facing networking today and how will SDN (and/or NFV) resolve it?

I think the industry is interested in being able to programmatically control their network regardless of the vendor or technology being used. Customers want to express a desire, i.e. connect A to Z with characteristics W, and have the “system” figure out how best to meet that desire given the existing and planned network state. This is the nirvana, but I think this is the problem that needs to be our focus. So often projects can get lost in the technology and lose sight of this goal.
