Telegram Desktop Native App for Linux Is Simply Awesome

A large number of people are using Whatsapp on their phones, but a very good alternative for that app is Telegram. The main difference is that the Telegram devs have also released a desktop client for the Linux platform, that is also open source.

It might not seem like much, to have a desktop client for a messaging app, but we would all love to have something from Whatsapp. On the other hand, Telegram is a less known app, but it’s just as good (if not better some might say). Now, less known still means it has dozens of millions of downloads for the mobile platform and that is a lot.

Fedora 21’s Performance Is Close To Ubuntu 14.10

Fedora 21 is due out in a few days and as such I’ve been busy extensively testing and benchmarking this first Fedora Linux update in a year. To not much surprise given the close package versions to Ubuntu 14.10, Fedora 21 isn’t performing very differently from the Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn…

Introducing the SGI UV 300 Big Memory Supercomputer

brian

“SGI has been delivering scaleable shared memory systems for over 2 decades. The 7th generation SGI NUMAlink7 technology is being delivered in the SGI UV 300, launched at SC14. A single UV 300 chassis (5U) provides 4 Xeon E7 processors, up to 96 DIMMs, and 12 PCIe slots. Connecting 8 of these units together in a single rack, using NUMAlink7 interconnect, then creates a huge pool of resources, up to 480 cores, 24TB DRAM, which can be extended with additional PCIe devices for highest performance FLASH in the industry, as well as compute acceleration with Intel Xeon Phi and visualization capabilities – all in a single system!”

Juniper Embraces Linux for Junos and Open Compute for New Switch

The Open Compute Platform launched its networking effort in 2013 in a bid to disrupt the business model of big networking vendors. One of those big vendors is Juniper Networks. Today, in a surprising move, Juniper announced that it is embracing the Open Compute Platform with its own open hardware switch, the OCX 1100.

The promise of the Open Compute Project’s networking effort is a “white box” for networking gear: networking equipment built on open hardware specifications that are not tied to specific operating systems. Juniper historically has built its own hardware, with its own silicon, and then used its own Junos operating system on top. Though Open Compute might on the surface appear to be directly competitive with the Juniper business model, Jonathan Davidson, SVP and GM, Security, Switching and Solutions Business Unit at Juniper, disagrees.
