Linux Kernel 3.15 Stable is Now Available! Install/Upgrade to Linux Kernel 3.15 in Ubuntu/Linux Mint

"The Linux Kernel 3.15 is now available for the users", announced Linus Torvalds. Just check what Linus wrote on the mailing list:
So I ended up doing an rc8 because I was a bit worried about some
last-minute dcache fixes, but it turns out that nobody seemed to even
notice those. We did have other issues during the week, though, so it
was just as well. The futex fixes and cleanups may stand out, but as
usual there's various other random fixes since rc8 in there too:
mainly drivers (drm, networking, sound, usb etc), networking,
scheduling and perf tooling.
But it's all been fairly small and quiet, which *may* of course be due
to the fact that last week was also the first week of the merge window
for 3.16. That might have distracted some developers. I'm not entirely
convinced I liked the overlap, but it seemed to work ok, and unless
people scream really loudly ("Please don't _ever_ do that again") and
give good reasons for doing so, I might end up doing that overlapping
merge window in the future too if it ends up helping out with some
particular timing issue.....

Google Embraces Docker, the Next Big Thing in Cloud Computing

Google is putting its considerable weight behind an open source technology that’s already one of the hottest new ideas in the world of cloud computing.

This technology is called Docker. You can think of it as a shipping container for things on the internet–a tool that lets online software makers neatly package their creations so they can rapidly move them from machine to machine to machine. On the modern internet–where software runs across hundreds or even thousands of machines–this is no small thing. Google sees Docker as something that can change the way we think about building software, making it easier for anyone to instantly tap massive amounts of computing power. In other words, Google sees Docker as something that can help everyone else do what it has been doing for years.

GNOME Foundation Board of Directors Election Results

The GNOME Foundation is governed by a seven-member board of directors who are elected annually. The just-completed vote had eleven people vying for those seats. Unless there is a challenge to the voting process, the new board members are: Sriram Ramkrishna, Ekaterina Gerasimova, Karen Sandler, Andrea Veri, Jeff Fortin, Tobias Mueller, and Marina Zhurakhinskaya. We looked at the question of corporate involvement in GNOME as one of the election issues being discussed in last week’s edition.

Docker 1.0 Released

Version 1.0 of the Docker application containerization system has been announced. It includes a number of new features; it is also the first version that the developers are willing to put forward as being production-ready. “Second, this milestone signifies Docker’s coming into its own as an open platform for distribution apps. In particular, the community’s use of Docker in such a wide variety of use-cases and apps in every phase of the application lifecycle confirms this. So from today you’ll hear us talk about Docker as a platform, its components being Docker Engine, the container runtime and packaging tool, and Docker Hub, a cloud-based service for collaboration, content, and workflow automation.

Most Federal CIOs Have Already Reached for the Cloud

Nearly every day, we get more evidence that cloud computing is at the top of the 2014 priority list for IT departments at companies large and small, but what about government organizations? In the U.S. at least, there is fresh evidence that the cloud is also prioritized by federal CIOs. According to a TechAmerica survey of 60 federal CIOs and federal information technology professionals from 32 different agencies, almost 90 percent of federal chief information officers say their agency has migrated to cloud computing in some way. The survey also shows that these CIOs have extensive plans for the cloud, as well.

Report Cites Google Surpassing Microsoft in Browser Market Share

Over the past several years, reports on browser market share have varied widely, and the press has regularly called into question whether, say, StatCounter’s or NetApplications’ numbers are most reliable. While not everyone looks to the Adobe Digital Index (ADI) for the final word on browser share, it actually provides a fairly reliable snapshot of the browsers the multitudes of people are  using. And, for the month of May, the ADI captured a remarkable statistic: Google Google has surpassed Microsoft as the leading browser maker in the U.S. for the first time.

According to the Adobe report

“Google now commands a 31.8% market share—desktop and mobile, combined—which is up 6% year-over-year (YoY). IE sits at 30.9%, down by 6% YoY, while Apple’s Safari, thanks to its vast mobile presence, is the third most popular browser, with a 25% share.”
