Riddell: Kubuntu Won’t be Switching to Mir or XMir

Jonathan Riddell has announced that the Kubuntu distribution will not be following Ubuntu in its switch to the Mir display server. “Here at Kubuntu we still want to work as part of the community development, taking the fine software from KDE and other upstreams and putting it on computers worldwide. So when Ubuntu Desktop gets switched to Mir we won’t be following. We’ll be staying with X on the images for our 13.10 release now in development and the 14.04LTS release next year. After that we hope to switch to Wayland which is what KDE and every other Linux distro hopes to do.

Valve Opens Portal for Linux Gamers

Online gaming service Steam announced on Monday that the popular shooter, puzzle-solving hybrid action game Portal has officially been released on the Linux platform. The game had been available on the open source operating system in beta form since early May, but this week Portal was declared stable and ready for purchase. Gamers who had bought a Windows PC version of Portalcan download the game to Linux for free, but it’s also available for sale for $9.99.

Ubuntu Rocks! According to Recent Poll

ubuntuIn light of developments over the last few years at Canonical, it seemed reasonable that Ubuntu’s popularity was waning. In fact, it seems fact given some recent numbers. However, according to a new poll at www.tuxmachines.org, visitors still think Ubuntu Rocks!

There aren’t many who will actually try to say that Ubuntu isn’t losing fans. Mint got almost double the popular vote in a recent distro poll and it’s been nearly three years since Ubuntu was on top at Distrowatch.com. In the the last few years, Ubuntu has fallen into second, third, and even fourth place in the last seven days. It’s dive into the proprietary pool is effecting its popularity. But apparently not with everyone. Because in a recent poll at your humble correspondent’s personal Website 41% of respondents said “Ubuntu Rocks!”
