Seven GNU Projects For .NET Developers

AJAX Control ToolKit

ACT is a very good framework for the ASP developers to develop rich internet applications. Check out the project’s page on the ASP.NET website for a comprehensive list of control demos, in addition to dozens of tutorials which show you how to take advantage of the toolkit’s many features.

ASP .NET MVC

he MVC architecture play a important role inside the web developer platform and this framework will help to accomplish. Thanks to the ASP.NET MVC Framework, .NET developers also have a powerful open source framework solution at their disposal.

Cruise Control

Because this level of automation involves numerous moving parts, several solutions which facilitate the creation of a custom continuous integration process have popped up in recent years, including the open source project CruiseControl. Offering tools for automating the build process, browsing the build results, and producing build reports, CruiseControl has become such a popular continuous integration solution that a large extension ecosystem has emerged.

DotNetNuke

One of the most popular such solutions is DotNetNuke, a powerful .NET-driven content management platform used by hundreds of thousands of small businesses and Fortune 500 corporations alike around the globe.

Mono

Maybe mono is the most representative, stable and powerful .NET Framework on Linux. Now fostered by Novell, Mono has grown in size and ambition over the years to not only allow .NET applications to run on alternative platforms, but also support Silverlight on Linux (known as Moonlight), and even build iPhone applications using C# programming (known as MonoTouch).

NAnt

Tired of dealing with a growing jumble of build difficulties, developer James Davidson created Ant, a build tool for Java projects which subsequently became the most diffuse build solution for the Java community. A subsequent tool named NAnt brings similar capabilities to the .NET community.

NHibernate

.NET developers have long had a powerful ORM tool at their disposal in NHibernate, a popular open source project which has been actively developed since its initial 2005 release. Capable of removing many of the difficult data-oriented tasks from a .NET developer’s TODO list

Linux Is Power, But Is Linux for Me?

There are many things that Linux is good at, for example Hardware detection and configuration, but as long as the hardware is compatible with Linux and this is the same for other OS. Linux has bug, like other Os has too. Linux can do things very easy… and other OS can too.

So how can I know if Linux is for me and what advantages I have if I choose Linux, well first let’s ask what are you looking for.

If you are a developer, so Linux is for you. This is because Linux are compatible with many (I think all) programming languages and the software come with the source code, so you can check it, try it and compile it.

If you are a gamer, then Linux is not for you. Yea, there is wine, but is better to run a game native, regardless of the drivers for the video cards. This same thing apply for the Designers, all the commercial software is better than the GNU software (in the design area) and the best is Photoshop.

But what about the average user… In this case Linux is for you. Ubuntu is a great distribution and a very good option for the average user.

These are just some examples on how Linux can help you and some others where Linux is not the best player. At the end, you have to choose what is best for you and what you can do with your hardware.

Nearly 8,000 Votes Cast to Determine New Geek Apparel in Linux.com Store

Today is the day! We’re announcing the winning design and designer in our Linux.com T-shirt Design Contest.

Our winning design, with 57 percent of the vote, is “The People’s Product” and was submitted by Said Hassan of Gaza in Palestine.

Linux.com Store merchandise is designed to invoke feelings of geek pride, freedom, fun, eccentricity, and originality. Said’s design touches on all of these qualities, but most of all – on geek pride. His design reads “We Made IT,” demonstrating the collective contributions of a worldwide community working together to produce the most innovative operating system.

Said is receiving travel expenses and a pass to attend LinuxCon in Boston and will also enjoy the fame associated with having his design displayed on T-shirts worn around the globe.

The contest was introduced when we launched the Linux.com Store in March. We received more than 100 submissions, painfully narrowed those original designs down to six finalists, and then put the ultimate decision in the hands of the community and the power of each designer to rally community support behind their creations. Three months after the Store opening, we’re excited to look towards LinuxCon in Boston where the T-shirts will be also be available to purchase.

The Linux.com Store offers an exclusive line of geek apparel that helps us fly our geek flags with pride while supporting the work of Linus Torvalds and the various activities and services provided by The Linux Foundation. Said’s contribution is a unique and important one.

A big thanks to all the people who submitted designs, and a special thanks to the finalists who helped bring new people to the Store by encouraging them to vote. The best ideas always come from the community and this contest was no exception. We’ll look forward to offering other chances to collaborate and win prizes based on promotions for this unique online shopping destination.
