Mandrake in the News
----------------------------------------
NewsForge.com -- Ex-Star Trek star "world's number one Linux
cheerleader".
Wil Wheaton, of movie and TV fame, writes in his personal weblog that
he recently received a Lindows computer as a gift; but when Lindows
took a dump, he went straight for the real thing -- Mandrake Linux 8.2:

"This install was the easiest thing I have ever done, and there wasn't
one single problem. The only glitch came when I was trying to get my
soundcard to work, which was hammered out quickly and painlessly,
thanks to the monkeys in the soapbox."

"I'm using Gnome, and I've never been happier. I am now going to become
the world's number one Linux cheerleader."

Business Case of the Week
----------------------------------------
Tri-Pacific Software uses & recommends Mandrake for server &
workstations.
Tri-Pacific Software - located in Alameda, California and Dallas, Texas
- is a business that provides tools for performing schedulability
analysis of real-time systems. The company has 15 employees and various
versions of Linux installed on a number of systems.

"Tom" from Tri-Pacific Software writes:
"My first Mandrake version was 6.0. I was immediately impressed with
the way the product was packaged and the administration tools that had
been added. I had been using RedHat versions prior to this and felt
that Mandrake was doing a better job of providing something that a
typical end-user would be able to work with."

Alberta hackers gear up for International War Driving Day

“In what is being billed as the first Alberta International Wardriving Day, hackers armed with
laptop computers outfitted with wireless networking gear and global positioning systems will
drive around Red Deer looking for unprotected wireless computer networks.

The aim of the game – organizers are calling it a “hobby” – is to see which hacker can find the
most wireless networks in one day.” More at GlobeTechnology.com.

A new tactic in the download war

“Record labels are reluctant to discuss spoofing, but their
trade group, the Recording Industry Association of
America, has called it a legitimate way to combat piracy.
And at least one company acknowledges that it has been
hired to distribute spoofs, although it won’t say by whom.” More at WashingtonPost.com.

LinuxWorld Expo — More suits, but plenty of sandals

“Let me tell you, a lot of people are really pissed off at Microsoft because of what they’re doing with licensing.
Microsoft was much more of an engineering company when Bill Gates was in charge. (Steve) Ballmer is a
marketing guy. He’s been sending out letters to customers threatening to audit them. Microsoft will milk you till
you’re dry, and I for one am tired of being milked,” adds Hayes.” More at LinuxPlanet.

IBM’s $2.5B fab turns Hudson into silicon valley (with Linux)

From EETimes. “This is the first fab whose IT infrastructure is all Linux-based, controlled by
some 1,700 1-GHz microprocessors able to access some 600 terabytes of
data,” said Perry Hartswick, project manager for factory integration solutions.
“Together with Cisco, we developed this IT manufacturing environment with
off-the-shelf parts.” Hartswick said Linux was evaluated against a Windows-based system and
performed flawlessly for three months, whereas the Windows-based system
failed after six or seven days.

More business, less boothness

“Last week’s LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco was surreal. If you walked in the front door of Moscone’s North Hall and looked at only
the brand names of the biggest booths on the floor, you might think you were at Comdex ’85 or PC Expo ’92. Clustered together in
sprawling booths at the center of the floor were IBM, HP, Sun, Intel and AMD. All of them were filled with upbeat business folk, talking
business trash, showing off third-party stuff and doing deals. For a suitwatcher like me, it was like pulling the trawler over a school of
tuna.” More at Linux Journal.

Record industry wants ISPs to play US Customs for digital music

Anonymous Reader writes: “Friday the major record labels initiated a lawsuit against the leading Internet service providers (ISP) for contributory copyright infringement. The ISPs, the suit contends, are allowing free access to websites throughout the world that allow the free trading of copyrighted material. This, they claim, make the ISPs accomplices in music piracy.
