Compaq Presario 722US notebook review with Linux

Amdmb.com writes “Amdmb.com has posted a new review, this time of the Compaq Presario 722US notebook computer based around the Duron 1.1 GHz processor. It is compared against a 1 GHz Athlon notebook as well as a value PC. Our reviewer discusses in detail, linux compatibility and anti-competitive software packaging with regards to Windows XP.

Quote: “For the purposes of this review, I wiped the entire disk clean and installed Linux. After this testing I needed to reinstall Windows XP and
make the system dual boot with Red Hat Linux 7.3 for the owner. This proved to be very problematic due to the nature of the Compaq Quick Restore disk.
By default it will only wipe out the entire hard drive and install onto a massive NTFS partition using all space. Linux installers like Mandrake or
SuSE can easily resize FAT32 partitions, but not NTFS, so this is a problem.””

The KONA line consists of two boards: the KONA SD for Standard Definition video and the KONA HD for High Definition video. SpectSoft, in November, will also be releasing software tools for high end video in Linux.”

Peru’s president to meet with Bill Gates

“”Peru’s President Alejandro Toledo will travel to Seattle this weekend for talks with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates during which he will sign accords to support his Huascaran Internet-for-schools project.”

Can anyone in the Linux community get in touch with President Toledo before it’s too late?”

Bringing KDE closer to Joe User’s desktop

From OS News:
“KDE 3 was released only a few months ago, and it is, to date, the most successful version of the series, serving more than 50% of the Unix and Linux
desktops, surpassing Gnome (~21%) and the rest of the gang. However, KDE is not perfect, and still not as comfortable as the Windows or as sexy as the
MacOSX desktops. It lacks two things: integration with the underlying system and UI polishing. Today, I will mostly talk about the polishing part, as
a lot has been already said elsewhere about the seemingly unsolvable integration issue (because of the modularity and completely independant/remote
software projects.) Update: And as I was just publishing this article, KDE 3.1-Alpha was released. I hope that some of my recommendations will make it
to the final version of KDE 3.1.”

Pakistan Government looks to the Linux Users Group

From Linux Journal:
“It must be quite flattering when a government sits up, takes note of the potential of a Linux-users group, and prominently features it in
advertisements noticed nationwide.

This happened recently in Pakistan, where a small but growing band of GNU/Linux enthusiasts–and some senior policy planners working at another
level–have understood the impact that this alternative computing operating system could have on their plans.”

Paul Vixie: Open source the only way forward

From Computerworld New Zealand:
“”Eventually,” says internet pioneer Paul Vixie, “even Microsoft will have to embrace open source.”

The giant from Redmond’s shared source initiative doesn’t go far enough, says Vixie, in the country to deliver talks and workshops at the Auckland
Uniforum conference.

“What’s the point of code you can only look at, but not touch?””

[ Snapshots ]” This is a Mandrake 8.2-specific install guide, but the screenshots and much of the commentary apply to all distros. Well worth reading if you’re interested in Ximian Gnome but haven’t had a chance to play with it yet.
