That’s also the biggest drawback: this Linux system is still way too complex. But it’s working, and I’m looking forward to learning more.” Gee, you’d think David Coursey had already played with Linux once or twice, given he comments frequently about it and he’s supposed to be a major tech journalist-commentator type, but from the looks of this column, apparently this is the first time ever that he’s run Linux on his desktop.

Atnewyork.com has a story about how Sun plans to go after HP’s customers in the enterprise market. The outgoing COO at Sun also mentions Linux: “Zander also defended the company’s embrace of Linux and open source operating systems, even though analysts have dubbed it somewhat of a laggard in the movement …

But at the same time, he reminded the audience that Linux, like its own Solaris server lines, like Red Hat’s Linux, even Apple’s Macintosh operating system, are all Unix (operating system) derivatives. ‘So clearly, there’s marketing going on here,’ he said.”

This Slashdot feature works to expose some of the shaky practices of the anti-virus industry, highlighting, as an example, the recent press release from McAfee regarding a .jpg image virus. From the article: “McAfee’s claim of a virus spread through JPEGs requires one essential element: you have to have already
been infected by ANOTHER virus transmitted by some actual executable code. What it comes down to is:

Once you’re infected with a virus, the virus can set you up to be infected by other viruses.

No shit, Sherlock.”

Linux fills the prescription for medical devices in Austria. This ZDNET UK story tells about EasyDose, a unit that monitors X-ray exposure data through hospital networks. “Developing on Linux has enabled our development team to concentrate on the main project
needs without having to carry an enormous unnecessary OS payload,” says one of the executives.

In a move that appears to be a coup for Michael Robertson et al, Wal-Mart’s
online store is offering eight different Microtel
PCs with LindowsOS included. The
computers sell for USD$299 to $599 and ship in one to seven days.NewsForge originally reviewed Wal-Mart’s OS-less PCs, a dramatic move away from the standard Windows-based
home computer. Now the retailer is advertising systems with the LindowsOS
distribution pre-installed, no longer just moving away from Windows, but now
directly competing with it:

“These computers do not ship with Microsoft
Windows. They ship with an exciting new UNIX
based Operating System (OS) named Lindows.
This exciting new OS delivers the stability
of UNIX with the ease of Windows and the
ability to run most Microsoft programs. These
computer systems are a perfect low cost
alternative to computers preloaded with
Microsoft Windows.”

To say that Lindows runs most Microsoft programs is a bit of a stretch.
Wal-Mart says the PCs come with “mail, word processor, web browser, address
book, calculator, cd player, MP3 player, Microsoft PowerPoint viewer, Word
viewer, and Excel viewer,” and buyers get to select three “free” Click-N-Run
applications from the Lindows.com warehouse (of GPLed KDE-based software, we
might add.)

No need to be concerned about the PCI 56k modems that come with the Microtel
systems — according to this NewsForge report, Microtel is shipping
Linux-compatible modems in these systems.

For a really cheap setup, get the $299 system, add a USD$49 HP printer (most of HPs printers work with Linux) and a 15″ Microtel monitor for USD$119. And if you’re especially Wal-Mart loyal, you can even add a subscription to the company’s ISP service, called Wal-Mart Connect, for USD$9.94 a month.

Xerox announced that it has selected Mandrake Linux for its XES (Xerox

based on the Caldera Graphics RIP. Almost 160 servers, 95% of the 
computer farm used by Xerox's Graphic Arts department, run on the 
combination Mandrake Linux/Caldera Graphics RIP.

X2 technology is the fastest on the market, providing high-volume 
production with costs that are 30% to 40% less than those offered by 
other digital products. The choice of Mandrake Linux enables Graphic 
Arts providers to handle client file formats created on any operating

What's Cookin' at MandrakeSoft?

Cooker Snapshot ISOs.
MandrakeSoft developers released a snapshot of Cooker on Friday, June 
7th. If you have an extra machine to test this latest development 
release, two ISO images are available for downloading:

MandrakeLinux-Cooker-20020606-CD1.i586.iso 
MandrakeLinux-Cooker-20020606-CD2.i586.iso

The images are approx. 700MBs each, so be sure to burn them with 80MIN 
700MB CD-Rs.

The developers are particularly interested in receiving feedback 
regarding:
- if the 700MB ISOs cause any problems
- if isolinux boots OK
  (if you have a laptop, try to boot and report the results)
- KDE3 
- the latest kernel

Please note:
- X is likely to have some troubles with i8XX motherboards.
- The default compiler is now gcc 3.1

The files can be downloaded from the usual FTP sites, just look for the 
/mandrake-iso/i586/ directory. Please report your results and 
observations to the Cooker mailing list:

Written by Andrei Gorine of McObject, the piece presents an in-depth view of embedded routing table management (RTM) software, and proposes that by replacing “homegrown” data management with commercial in-memory database systems (IMDSs) in this role, IP routers can better evolve to keep pace with the Internet’s growth. Gorine is principal architect for McObject’s eXtremeDB, an IMDS available for embedded Linux.”
