eclipse.org Delivers C/C++ Development Tools

- Open Source Project Forms, Sponsored by Red Hat and IBM
- Tightly Integrated, Multi-Language Development Platform for Linux
- Project Delivers Full Function C/C++ IDE Beta

NEW YORK--January 29, 2002--Today, eclipse.org made a fully functional C and
C++ Integrated Development Environment available for evaluation with the
eclipse platform on Linux? workstations. The C/C++ tools, which complement
existing Java? language support, make the eclipse platform the first full
function, tightly integrated, multi-language tools environment available as
open source. The beta C/C++ IDE is available for immediate download at
http://www.eclipse.org. Two founding members of eclipse.org, IBM and Red
Hat, have joined together to sponsor this work.

The eclipse platform is a new open source environment for creating,
integrating and deploying application development tools for use across a
broad range of computing technology. It provides a common set of services
and establishes the framework, infrastructure and interactive workbench used
by project developers to build application software and related elements.
The eclipse platform provides source code building blocks, plug-in
frameworks and running examples that facilitate application tools
development.

C and C++ developers that want to deploy Linux based projects with a Linux
development environment will benefit from advanced facilities that help to
speed project related activities. The C/C++ IDE for the eclipse platform
includes a GUI based source code editor with advanced code browsing and
navigation features like code assist, syntax based color highlighting and
integrated help facilities. The integrated C/C++ debugger presents many of
the views that eclipse platform developers are already familiar with, and
adds new ones for inspecting registers and storage. It also provides direct
access to an underlying command line interface for forming advanced debugger
requests.

eclipse.org now includes members and founding steward companies: Borland,
IBM, MERANT, QNX Software Systems, Rational Software, RedHat, SuSE,
TogetherSoft and WebGain. Hundreds of thousands of downloads have been
logged at the eclipse.org website.

Linux Network Services bootcamp with free laptop!

Author: JT Smith

From Rajesh Goyal

LinuxCertified, Inc., a leading provider of Linux training, will offer its next Linux Network Services Bootcamp, on February 16-17, 2002 in San Francisco bay area (south bay). This workshop has been designed for network administrators in charge of providing key network services on Linux servers. All students get a free Linux laptop!

This bootcamp is structured along the lines of the highly successful Linux System Administration bootcamp. Students get a powerful Linux laptop at the start of the class, along with other class materials. Their goal is to create a fully functional and secure Linux server. This server will provide the most important internet services such as Web, DNS, Mail, DHCP and File serving.

Students start by putting the system securely on an intranet. They are then led by a team of network experts via carefully designed lectures and labs to configure the network services mentioned above. Students take this laptop with them as a fully configured network server to further enhance their Linux expertise.

Linux and open source network applications such as Apache, BIND, Sendmail, SAMBA etc. are the building blocks for most network services being offered today within the organizations as well as on the internet. This bootcamp enables administrators to rapidly and securely provide these services to their clients. A detailed agenda for the bootcamp is available at:

Microsoft: A little more ‘open’ (LinuxWorld preview)

Author: JT Smith

Anonymous Reader writes, “Microsoft’s “alternative philosophy” of Shared Source will remain in place.
Despite those philosophical differences and an anticipated avalanche of ‘evil empire’ verbal abuse, Miller said he and his team are looking forward to attending LinuxWorld this week. Microsoft sends some employees to every open source event, Miller said, and a dozen or so plan to attend LinuxWorld Tuesday through Friday at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York.

‘Our show badges identify us as Microsoft employees, so of course people always take some pokes at us,’ said one Microsoft employee who plans to be present at the show. ‘But we’re used to it, and at least at Linux events the ragging is usually pretty good-natured. It’s MacWorld that’s really rough.'”
