OpenBeOS: The Open Source BeOS

Author: JT Smith

Anonymous Reader writes, “After Palm announced the buyout of Be, Inc.’s intellectual property & Technology and after some consequent indications from several key people that Palm has no interest at Be’s products and especially in BeOS, a number of the BeOS believers tried to find a new home. Some found confort in AtheOS, others joined BeUnited‘s effort to license the BeOS source code, while some developers formed efforts like BlueOS and OpenBeOS. OpenBeOS (OBOS for its friends) consists from a number of BeOS developers who are trying to recreate the BeOS Kits in a form of a new, complete and open source Operating System that has source and if possible binary compatibility with BeOS 5. One of the most important people in this effort, Michael Phipps, also part of their kernel team, is being interviewed by OSNews.”

DoS attacks getting scary, CERT warns

Author: JT Smith

The Register: “The mechanisms for controlling large numbers of compromised boxes have also
changed, said Houle, becoming vastly more sophisticated since DDoS attacks
began in 1999. Attackers increasingly use IRC — the Internet’s chat room systems
— to direct attacks, sometimes using domain name records as a kind of dead drop
for directing their agents to a particular IRC server.

More disturbing to network operators, attackers have taking over the machines that
route and direct the flow of Internet traffic, to use them as weapons.”

Viva Linux in Las Vegas

“As I wandered down aisle after aisle of corporations selling their wares to ISPs and ASPs, I
saw no obvious sign of Linux or other open-source solutions. Yet, as is everything else in

Borland blames Kylix bugs on Linux

Author: JT Smith

LinuxWorld: “It certainly would not
be a surprise for friction to occur when Windows and Linux developers are confined in close quarters. Now
a recent post on a Borland community message board by Danny Thorpe, a well-known Borland engineer
who has been involved with the Kylix project from the beginning, has stirred the pot. Thorpe, rightly or
wrongly, criticized both Linux and open source in explaining why Kylix wasn’t working exactly as intended
at library load time.”

In-depth with StarOffice filters

Author: JT Smith

LinuxPlanet: “In order to get the answers on why users were experiencing problems with Word filters in OpenOffice Writer, I
decided to go to the source itself and dropped a line to Juergen Pingel, who is the project owner for the word
processor project in OpenOffice. He kindly referred me to Dublin-resident Caolán McNamara who is the filters
developer for Writer.

McNamara answered my questions about what exactly was going on with these issues and even pointed me to
a pretty good document explaining how the overall filtering process works. He did this in favor of giving me a
description of the process himself, which he characterized as” a set of incredibly complex mind-numbing
processes to find text, graphics, and attributes in a Word document to map them to our own document
features.””
