Author: JT Smith

LinuxSecurity: “The Bush administration confirmed Monday that it will spend $10 million to launch a newly intensive war against cyber-terrorism, which many
government officials and terrorism experts consider a serious threat to national security with the potential for causing mass confusion and loss of life. As
evidence of the new emphasis on high-tech terrorism, the White House is expected to announce today the creation of a “cyber-security” office.”

Although free-file sharing pioneer Napster has been mired in legal battles and kept offline since last July for copyright infringement, its successors are clearly on
the rise. The number of unique home users of these file swapping alternatives have increased 492 percent, from 1.2 million in March to 6.9 million in August,

The other side of the DMCA

Author: JT Smith

CNET: “The Digital Millennium Copyright Act–a revision to U.S. copyright laws–has taken a real beating recently,
thanks in large part to a high-profile case against a sympathetic computer programmer branded as a criminal
hacker.

Despite this case, the DMCA is, at least in part, a useful law that benefits e-commerce. The problem is that the DMCA
is a very lengthy law and many press accounts and Netizens have focused lately on only one portion of it, thereby
tarnishing the whole law as a legal mistake.”
