An analysis of KDE memory usage

Author: JT Smith

From KDE.News, posted by Lubos Lunak: “I was recently hired by SuSE to focus on optimizing KDE, and as part of my work, I have
written an analysis of KDE memory usage based on Waldo Bastian’s previous paper
concerning GNU/Linux linker issues and KDE startup-performance. As it turns out, the
linker issues examined by Waldo do indeed have an effect on the memory usage of C++
applications compiled and linked under GNU/Linux. The most important number from this paper: About
650KB of memory wasted per KDE application not launched via KDE Init.”

Linux the hard way: A newbie installation

Author: JT Smith

From osOpinion: When I was asked to help two
sets of newbies install and use Linux systems in one week, I took the opportunity to do a case study and discover just how hard Linux was to the absolute
novice.

The case study consists of my own family, who wanted wireless networking and Internet connection sharing, as well as a friend — who shall remain
nameless, lest he die of embarrassment — who wanted a general-purpose Linux system.”

Author: JT Smith

Can Microsoft ship 800K Xbox consoles for a November launch day? Doubtful, say analysts polled for this Reuters report. Even Redmond isn’t quite so sure these days, admitting that it won’t actually know how many consoles will be available on launch day until a Mexico assembly line hits full speed. Now the company is saying 300,000 units for day of launch is as good of a guess as any as to how would be available.

Microsoft, DOJ still miles apart

Author: JT Smith

According to a joint status report filed with the presiding judge, Microsoft, the Department of Justice, and 18 U.S. states are still miles apart on some issues regarding how the antitrust case should proceed. While all sides seem to agree on procedural efforts, discovery and scheduling issues remain. Microsoft, right or wrong, wants as much time as possible to, as one observor put it, “…put off the day of reckoning as long into the future as it possibly can.” Read the report at ZDNet.
