Author: JT Smith

Kelly McNeill writes “A computer worm that was discovered in the United States early Tuesday has quickly spread around the world, corrupting corporate networks and personal computers. The outbreak of the virus, dubbed “Nimda” — the word “admin” spelled backwards — was disrupting Internet use in Asia and Europe on Wednesday. Internet security experts estimate that more than 130,000 Web servers and personal computers in the United States have been infected, and they expect the onslaught to continue. Linux the hard way – a newbie installation

Author: JT Smith

Kelly McNeill writes “I have always been of the opinion that installing, configuring and using Linux is not hard these days. Certainly the advent of distributions has simplified the process immensely. Perhaps the only reason I hold this opinion is that I have learnt the system from the ground up. I have the patience to sit down and read the documentation, or search for alternative sources of information on the Net. So, when I was asked to help two sets of newbies install and use Linux systems in one week, I took the opportunity to do a case study and discovered just how hard Linux is to the absolute novice.”

Uphill climb for Hewlett-Packard and Compaq

Author: JT Smith

From The Industry Standard: “Up to now, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq
Computer, which announced plans to merge on
Sept. 3, have had little luck keeping pace with
Dell, whose lean direct-sales model has made it
the low-cost PC producer. Becoming more
competitive will be among their biggest
challenges as they try to convince a skeptical Wall Street their proposed
$17 billion merger, which the companies got back to work on after a week of
helping customers disrupted by terrorist attacks against U.S. targets last
week, will pay off.”

Palm, fan sites duke it out

Author: JT Smith

Was it something they said? When handheld maker Palm, Inc. sent letters to enthusiast sites with the word “Palm” in their name or domain name, they merely sought to get the sites to change the reference to “Palm OS” by offering a free license to use that name. However, a few sites have decided to eliminate any reference to Palm. Palmguru.com is changing its name to PocketAnywhere.com, and Palmgoddess.com will soon be known as Pocketgoddess.com. And to make matters worse, it’s not just a domain name that’s changing — some of these sites have also decided to focus on other handheld devices such as the ones powered by Microsoft’s PocketPC. CNET News.com reports.

Registries offended by domain sales

Author: JT Smith

CNET News.com reports that VeriSign will halt some auctions of domain name related to last Tuesday’s terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. In the days after the tradgedy, businesses and individuals rushed to register a variety of names such as 09112001.com and Worldtradecenterdisaster.com. VeriSign’s policy seems to be “ban anything referring to the attack,” and their actions may have included decommissioning the domain names of sites intended as memorials. Other registries, including Register.com, say they will not revoke registrations based solely on the name of a site.

Dr. Linux Job, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the dotbomb

Author: JT Smith

“After three or so months of pathetic (did you know there is a cap on unemployment?) income, bill collectors and
sleepless nights, I landed a great job working with Unix & Linux at the Center for Advanced Computer Research at
Caltech. Along the way, I discovered some facts from my successes and failures, and those of my friends, which may
be of use to you.” John R. Morris shares his tips for landing a job in the employer’s market at Linux.com.

Mozilla relicensing

Author: JT Smith

From Slashdot: “Today, the bits go into the tree to relicense Mozilla under a triple
license, MPL/GPL/LGPL. What this means, for those of you who aren’t too up on this
stuff, is that when YOU take the code, and make your own product, you now have a triple
choice as to what license you want to distribute your code under.”

FCC extends phone surveillance date

Author: JT Smith

Reuters: “The Federal Communications Commission said on Wednesday it granted
telephone companies an extra seven weeks to comply with making their networks capable
of certain electronic surveillance.

Wireless and wireline telephone carriers are supposed to have their networks capable of
monitoring so-called packet-mode communications by Sept. 30, but the FCC gave them until
Nov. 19 to either comply or file individual appeals for more time.”
