The Scratchware Manifesto (why gaming sucks)

Author: JT Smith

At TheUnderdogs.org: “The machinery of gaming has run amok.

Instead of serving creative vision, it suppresses it. Instead of encouraging innovation, it represses it. Instead of taking its cue from our most
imaginative minds, it takes its cue from the latest month’s PC Data list. Instead of rewarding those who succeed, it penalizes them with development
budgets so high and royalties so low that there can be no reward for creators. Instead of ascribing credit to those who deserve it, it seeks to associate
success with the corporate machine.”

Mozilla 0.9.4 branched and behind schedule

Author: JT Smith

MozillaQuest Magazine (MozillaQuest.com} reports, “With more than 100 bugs still targeted to it, the upcoming Mozilla Milestone 0.9.4 edition was branched earlier today from the main development-tree trunk — five days behind schedule. Moreover, at the time of its branching Mozilla Milestone 0.9.4 had more than 3,000 bugs by conservative estimates and nearly 15,000 bugs by less conservative estimates. That´s up about 1,000 bugs from the some 14,000 bugs counted by less conservative estimates on 1 August 2001.”

Lexmark can live without Compaq

Author: JT Smith

CNET: “For all the bombast from Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Computer about competing against the likes of IBM, stock
market players on Tuesday decided that the biggest loser in an HP-Compaq merger wouldn’t be a seller of PCs,
servers or “big iron” hardware, nor a software peddler, nor a consulting and technology services provider.

Instead, Wall Street turned a collective glare upon the main rival for HP’s most profitable division. Shares of printer
maker Lexmark opened Tuesday’s trading almost 12 percent below their previous close and finished the regular
session down 9.4 percent on fears that the company would suffer from the defection of one of its leading customers.”

Your friendly neighborhood Linux salesman

Author: JT Smith

“It has become a familiar refrain: In order to gain all the clout it so richly deserves, Linux needs more users. All the petition campaigns in the world
for hardware makers to provide Linux support for their scanners or video cards disappear into insignificance when compared to sales figures
demonstrating that the gadget that has Linux support sells better than the one that doesn’t. And to gain those figures, users are needed.” More at LinuxPlanet.

RED HAT EXPANDS EMBEDDED OFFERINGS WITH NEW RED HAT
EMBEDDED LINUX DEVELOPER SUITE

New Embedded Linux Developer Suite Provides a Comprehensive and Standardized
Open Source Platform for Design and Customization of Red Hat Embedded Linux in
Devices

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, BOSTON, MA--September 5, 2001-- Red
Hat Inc., (Nasdaq:RHAT), the leader in developing, deploying and managing open source
solutions, today unveiled the Red Hat Embedded Linux Developer Suite, a packaged
offering that combines new versions of its embedded Linux platform, development tools,
runtime technologies and support services into a single offering designed to meet the
needs of developers looking for a standardized open source platform for faster creation,
deployment and testing of target software components for embedded devices.

The Red Hat Embedded Linux Developer Suite includes Red Hat Embedded Linux based
on the industry-leading open source Red Hat Linux operating system configured for use
in embedded systems. The offering provides the developer with broad capability for
different device requirements targeting MIPS, SuperH, X86, PowerPC and
ARM/StrongARM/XScale architectures.

"The demand for open source development tools and software is exploding as embedded
developers from telecommunications, datacommunications and Internet appliance
manufacturers are discovering the cost, performance and time-to-market benefits inherent
to open source-based embedded devices," said Michael Tiemann, chief technical officer,
Red Hat. "The addition of this packaged offering along with our custom engineering
services and consulting provides a standard starting point for those developers looking to
quickly integrate the benefits of a full-featured open source OS like Red Hat Embedded
Linux into their development projects."

"In a recent survey, almost half of all embedded developers responding indicated that
they either use, or plan to use, embedded Linux within the next five years," said Stephen
Balacco, industry analyst with Venture Development Corporation. "These new products
position Red Hat to capitalize on this opportunity."

Key features of the Red Hat Embedded Linux Developer Suite include:

- New version of Red Hat Embedded Linux based on the industry-standard Linux 2.4 kernel

Linux software opening Windows of opportunities

Author: JT Smith

“The company’s Win4Lin product displays a Windows desktop on a
Linux machine, running Windows applications such as Microsoft Word
and Excel that users are dependent on. And it can bring up that
desktop from any networked computer.

“You need this combination that we have of Linux plus the Windows
applications moved to the network,” Curtin said. “We think that’s the
proper aligning of the stars to make this work.” More at Austin-American Statesman.

Merged HP will send 16,000 staff ‘Paq’ing

Author: JT Smith

The Register: “At a news conference yesterday HP CEO Carly Fiorina said ten per cent of the combined workforce of
HP and Compaq would be shed if the proposed merger clears the usual statutory and shareholder
hurdles. That adds up to between 15,000 and 16,000 staff who’ll be sent Paq-ing.

But it may be slightly less, as the real head count at each company is fuzzy.”

IBM reveals new midrange Unix server

Author: JT Smith

CNET: “IBM is introducing a new midrange Unix server with the company’s fastest processor yet, it revealed on its Web
site Tuesday.

The eight-processor pSeries 660 6M1 comes with either the earlier RS64 III chip running at 500MHz or the newer
RS64 IV at 750MHz, according to information posted on IBM’s Web site. The newer CPU is the same one used in the
top-end p680 server, but that system uses slower 450MHz or 600MHz models.”
