40,000 Linux instances on a mainframe? Not quite.

Author: JT Smith

Posted at Librenix: “I’ve written on this topic before but I keep running into the same misconception: that the IBM mainframe is a cost-effective
platform for Linux because over 40,000 instances of Linux have been shown to run concurrently on a modern mainframe.

That demonstration was effectively a gimmick. No, I don’t believe it was intended as a gimmick; only that it was widely
misconstrued and, therefore, became indistinguishable from a gimmick in the media circus that resulted. It was depicted by the
media as a practical demonstration that one could replace 40,000 PC’s running Linux with a single mainframe.”

Review: IBM ThinkPad T22

Author: JT Smith

LinuxHardware.org reviews IBM’s ThinkPad T22, the first Linux computer to ship with a fully licensed software DVD player. “The T22 is a wonderful notebook for the business person on the go or
even someone just wanting a solid laptop with some a nice DVD player and other standard multimedia features. Gamers and
others who need 3D support should steer clear of this laptop since without DRI, you’re going to be without any OpenGL
goodness.”

Tonight on The Linux Show

Author: JT Smith

Tonight LIVE on
www.thelinuxshow.com — At 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et…. Kevin Hill, Jeff Gerhardt, PJ Hyett, Doc Searls(Linux Journal), and Arne Flones have a show lined up tonight on The Linux Show that may not be a train wreck!!
In Segment One – Hot News: We will be covering the hot Linux news of
the last few weeks. In particular, we will talk about HP buying Compaq. Plus we will give an update on our finally completed conversion to Ogg Vorbis.

In Segments Two- Linux World Expo Wrap Up
Well the most recent Linux World Expo is in the history books. We will discuss the buzz on the Linux Industries showcase event with Doc Searls and Russ Pavlicek. Is this indeed “The End of the Beginning” (and not the beginning of the end) as many have predicted, and a real sign of good things to come in the future?

In Segments Three (if we have time)- “Microsoft, Linux and the Fat Lady PART V”- or Contrary to many opinions, Linux is far from over and Microsoft still has a very very long road ahead
This is PART FIVE of a segment that will carry over the next several weeks.

This week we will focus on the aftermath of the 10th anniversary of the creation of Linux. Many in mainstream media were caught off guard by the staying power of Linux to survive to its 10th anniversary. It caused many to re-focus on Linux and look at the ongoing impact in light of present economic trends. Is it possible that a recession may do for Linux what wall street could not???

Other opinions are welcome at GeekCast. If you would like to join us on the show, check our IRC Chat(irc.thelinuxshow.com #linuxshow).

Remember tune in at 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et.

HP-Compaq: Biggest challenges ahead

Author: JT Smith

CNET: “Hewlett-Packard and Compaq are combining to form the second biggest PC company, with a
significant presence in nearly every country in the world.

But it’s not like life is going to get much easier.

Relentless price pressures, slowing PC sales, a sour economy, and the difficulty of merging two overlapping corporate
bureaucracies that have been trying to shed employees during the past few months are just some of the problems
facing Carly Fiorina and Michael Capellas, the respective CEOs of HP and Compaq.”
