CNet reports that Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) is suing Sony over digital televisions, asserting that the Institute is entitled to a share of the profits from sales of digital televisions.

Kelly McNeill writes “Sendmail Inc., the company founded by the man who wrote the code for the first e-mail program 20 years ago, on Monday said it will release a version of its e-mail server software for Linux-Powered IBM mainframe computers. Launching its product line on IBM’s zSeries mainframe converts Sendmail into the world’s largest mail server program. IBM has pushed the Linux operating system on its mainframes for financial reasons — common software packages like Sendmail are much cheaper than expensive “mainframe-specific” software.”

The Perl language adapter will provide Perl software with a native interface to the JMS/XML based Open3.org integration platform. Kelly McNeill writes “Microsoft Corp. released the latest version of its Internet Explorer as a free download Monday in anticipation of the release of its Windows XP operating system. The new version, IE 6.0, will be included on every machine running Windows XP. Although the new browser adds features that enable users to more easily play music and videos, Microsoft is generating controversy for features that IE 6.0 lacks. The new IE has dropped support for rival browser Netscape, Apple Computer’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) QuickTime, and Java plug-ins, in favor of its proprietary Active X technology.”

Kelly McNeill writes “Many have discussed what to do about Microsoft’s hold on the desktop, as well as its .NET initiative. However, I think it’s time to start looking at how Microsoft is selling into areas that have traditionally been the stronghold of Unixes. Businesses have collectively spent billions of dollars on infrastructure building and IT systems purchasing and maintenance. And ever-hungry Microsoft has not failed to smell the loot. If Microsoft can make .NET the “preferred platform” for business inter/intra/extranet solutions, then the corporate viability of non-Microsoft systems will go down.”
