Tim Ney joins GNOME Foundation

level, the GNOME Foundation, the organization driving the direction and
development of GNOME desktop software for GNU/Linux, UNIX and other free
software systems, has hired Timothy Ney as executive director. Mr. Ney
is well known in the free software community for his past work with the
Free Software Foundation, where he was the managing officer, and as a
popular speaker and advocate.”

Rambus faces class-action suit for patent fraud

Northern District of California, alleging that the
company misled investors by fraudulently
claiming patents and collecting licensing
revenue related to Synchronous Dynamic RAM

IBM boasts self-healing in ‘Regatta’ server

Network World Fusion: “IBM Tuesday offered a glimpse under the hood
of an upcoming server codenamed Regatta,
which makes use of self-diagnosing and
self-healing features designed to make the
server more dependable.

The server is due to be released in the fourth
quarter and uses up to 32 of IBM’s new Power4
processors. It will be the first member of the
eServer family to use the Power4 chip, each of
which comprises two processor cores running
at more than 1 GHz.”

Do computers cause work injuries?

MSNBC: “Since computers became a staple of offices
nationwide, many workers have been diagnosed with
repetitive stress injuries, especially carpal tunnel
syndrome. But now some researchers say that, contrary
to popular thought, carpal tunnel may not be associated
with computer use at all. Some skeptics go so far as to
say they don’t believe any workstation-related factors
contribute to the various ills collectively known as RSI.
The majority of doctors, however, counter that such a
broad stance ignores the science.”

Fujitsu smashes hard disk recording density record

developed technology that allows more than
100G bits of data to be stored on one square
inch of hard disk space – a new record that is
expected to lead to notebook computer drives
with capacities over 100G bytes appearing on

Chicago: High-tech heaven?

According to the results of a survey released by the University of Minnesota, Chicago has more high-tech jobs than any other metro area in the United States — 347,000 of them, to be exact. That bounty of jobs puts the Windy City ahead of better-known tech meccas such as second-place winner Washington, D.C., and third runner up San Jose. Full story at ABC News.

Microsoft defends Passport in Washington

News.com: “Microsoft on Wednesday descended on the nation’s capital, trying to quell
concerns its Passport authentication service poses a threat to consumers’ privacy or
security.

The Redmond, Wash.-based company is here at the behest of the Center for Democracy &
Technology (CDT), a consumer advocacy group that wishes to hear directly from the software
maker on its plans, said Adam Sohn, Microsoft’s manager for U.S.-.Net platform strategy. The
software giant may use the opportunity to talk with other groups or even some legislators.”
