java.sun.com interviews its “Open Source Diva” Danese Cooper for her observations on last week’s Mundie-Tiemann debate. Says Cooper: “Microsoft’s rhetoric that shared source is a “corner of open source” indicates to me a lack of understanding. They
think open source is achieved with short licenses.”

NewsAlert posts this Reuters report: “U.S. software and services company Red Hat and Britain’s closely held 3G Lab said on Monday they will develop a “Linux
for the wireless world” as they team up to write an operating system for Web phones. The two companies will take on established names such as Psion-owned Symbian and Microsoft which have already developed their own operating
systems for a new generation of smartphones and between them gained support of all of the major mobile phone manufacturers.

The first smartphones, designed to display email, run calendars and play games and video clips, will hit the market later this year.”

If you’ve received one of those nastygrams from the Business Software Alliance (BSA) or even if you haven’t, you might be interested in this ZDNet story posted at Yahoo: “What you probably don’t know is that, like so many of the companys that stuff your maiboxes with junk mail, the BSA… has no intention of following up on its letters — regardless of how threatening and personal they may seem. It won’t phone. And it won’t pop in for a surprise audit.” Turns out this is just a marketing campaign crafted to frighten unknowing users into buying more software.
