The spy in your living room

Author: JT Smith

UK Guardian:

Touted as a possible replacement for both PC and analogue
television, the set-top box that is slowly finding a place in UK
homes might look harmless enough. But once you are safely
tucked up in bed, the thing switches itself back on, goes online,
dials up corporate HQ and reports back every programme you
watched and every online purchase made that day.”

Study: Someone is watching you

Author: JT Smith

ZDNET: “Up to 14 million U.S. workers are subject to continuous surveillance of their e-mail and
Internet use, according to a new study.

That means roughly one of every three of the 40 million employees using e-mail or the Internet
on the job are monitored, the Privacy Foundation says in a statement announcing the report, to
be released Monday. Worldwide, 100 million workers, or about 27 percent, are monitored, the
nonprofit group said.

The study was based on financial reports from companies that sell software that helps employers
monitor online activities. The most popular software surveillance packages are Websense for
tracking Internet use and MIMEsweeper for scrutinizing e-mail, the foundation said.”

Settlement may now be possible in Microsoft case

Author: JT Smith

ZDNET: “If the government and Microsoft can’t hammer out a
settlement soon, a new U.S. District Court judge will be
assigned to the antitrust case next month and charged with
proposing remedies.

The operative word is “if.”

To hear Bill Gates tell it, Microsoft is eager to settle.
Immediately after the split decision on the case June 28,
Gates said the company will work to resolve the case
“without continued need for litigation.”

Messenger mess enters 7th day

Author: JT Smith

ZDNET: “The MSN Messenger outage spilled over into a seventh day Monday, with many users of
the free service complaining of inaccessible accounts, despite Microsoft’s claims most had
been restored.

MSN Messenger users started experiencing trouble Tuesday, with the most commonly reported
glitches being connection problems and missing buddy lists of friends. Microsoft temporarily took
MSN Messenger offline around 3 p.m. PDT Thursday in an attempt to fix the problem. Although
the company had partially restored the service in many countries by Friday morning, problems
still plagued many customers on Monday.”

Managed security deals leave networks vulnerable

Author: JT Smith

ZDNET: “Companies are increasingly turning over the keys to their
e-businesses to security professionals, who often lack the
expertise or personnel to operate them safely.

Hiring security providers to protect corporate networks and
the critical data those networks contain is a growing trend,
but the companies providing such services are
unregulated and not subject to industry certification.”

Behold the power of the GPL: Nautilus 1.0.4

Author: JT Smith

DebianPlanet.org: “Even after Eazel’s unfortunate demise, work continues on Nautilus, the GNOME
desktop shell. Version 1.0.4 of which recently entered unstable and comes
packed with enough eye-candy to feed a developing nation. Of course, its
functional too 😉 Yet this development has only been able to continue as Eazel
released Nautilus under the GPL, so let that be a lesson for you, if you want ever lasting respect and
appreciation, release your code under the GPL.”

MP3.com scores big airport deal

Author: JT Smith

An anonymous reader writes: “37 Million people stream in and out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport every year. Now MP3.com will stream its independent core of artists to those millions as they wait to board their flights. Why is it a big deal for the company to step into the “elevator music” business? MP3.com artists don’t make the MTV or radio rotation and so they need another mass venue to broadcast their tunes. Airports and train stations can offer them the exposure.
