Linux backers’ common specification faces challenge

Author: JT Smith

Computerwire: “The industry’s first specification for a generic Linux build is facing an immediate challenge just days after a consortium
of open source-friendly vendors finally published the delayed Linux Standard Base (LSB), designed for application
portability. However, at least one leading Linux distribution – Red Hat – does not conform to LSB 1.0. Furthermore, it is unclear
whether Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based Red Hat Inc will – or should – conform to LSB as its Linux
distribution effectively becomes a de-facto standard through its growing customer base.”

The X factor

Author: JT Smith

The Industry Standard reports it, we’re just pointing in their direction: “Can Microsoft rescue the technology economy?
Some savvy investors think so. The theory is that
the introduction of Windows XP on Oct. 25 will be
met with a surge of related personal computer
sales, first to businesses and later to consumers.
To take full advantage of XP, the thinking goes,
will require not just an upgrade but also new
hardware.

If the theory is right – and you certainly wouldn’t
know it from the recent news out of the PC
industry, where demand has been sinking and
prices sliding – then XP could also boost a range
of related companies.”

DebianPlanet back online

Author: JT Smith

DebianPlanet explains a recent outage: “We experianced some offtime as a result of the slashdotting we receive following the
article on Woody’s freeze. Our generous sponsors uklinux.net, temporarily suspended
our account, when the load on the server became excessive, the problems were
worsened by the poor PHP-Nuke code, which lead to the MySQL server overloading
and leading to a load on the server of approximately 50 at certain times. Because the
server is a shared resource running essential services for uklinux.net (mail etc) they
took the wise decision to drop the site.” All is well, now.
