of open source-friendly vendors finally published the delayed Linux Standard Base (LSB), designed for application
portability. However, at least one leading Linux distribution – Red Hat – does not conform to LSB 1.0. Furthermore, it is unclear
whether Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based Red Hat Inc will – or should – conform to LSB as its Linux
distribution effectively becomes a de-facto standard through its growing customer base.”

hacking into a NASA computer at the Ames Research Center in Northern California.

Jason Schwab, 18, has been charged with computer abuse and conspiracy to commit computer
abuse, according to documents filed in Children’s Court in Bernalillo County.”

The Register: “Sun Microsystems UK’s quick-witted marketing bunnies, have booked some text ads
with FT.com’s Information Technology email newsletter to exploit confusion over the
Compaq’s decision to sell Alpha to Intel and to adopt the Itanium as its server platform.”

The Register: “Sun Microsystems has discovered a flaw in its Solaris operating system which,
under rare circumstances, could result in the silent corruption of data stored on its
enterprise servers.

The bug came to light when Sun’s development engineers reviewed the code used
to implement dynamic reconfiguration in the process of developing the feature,
which allows boards to be swapped out of machines without having to shut down
systems.”

Some savvy investors think so. The theory is that
the introduction of Windows XP on Oct. 25 will be
met with a surge of related personal computer
sales, first to businesses and later to consumers.
To take full advantage of XP, the thinking goes,
will require not just an upgrade but also new
hardware.

know it from the recent news out of the PC
industry, where demand has been sinking and
prices sliding – then XP could also boost a range
of related companies.”
