The X factor

Author: JT Smith

The Industry Standard reports it, we’re just pointing in their direction: “Can Microsoft rescue the technology economy?
Some savvy investors think so. The theory is that
the introduction of Windows XP on Oct. 25 will be
met with a surge of related personal computer
sales, first to businesses and later to consumers.
To take full advantage of XP, the thinking goes,
will require not just an upgrade but also new
hardware.

If the theory is right – and you certainly wouldn’t
know it from the recent news out of the PC
industry, where demand has been sinking and
prices sliding – then XP could also boost a range
of related companies.”

DebianPlanet back online

Author: JT Smith

DebianPlanet explains a recent outage: “We experianced some offtime as a result of the slashdotting we receive following the
article on Woody’s freeze. Our generous sponsors uklinux.net, temporarily suspended
our account, when the load on the server became excessive, the problems were
worsened by the poor PHP-Nuke code, which lead to the MySQL server overloading
and leading to a load on the server of approximately 50 at certain times. Because the
server is a shared resource running essential services for uklinux.net (mail etc) they
took the wise decision to drop the site.” All is well, now.

Microsoft’s next trial–Europe

Author: JT Smith

Microsoft may have dodged the breakup bullet in the United States (for now), but a European Commission investigation of the company could produce a less desireable outcome. European governments have less of a burden than their U.S. counterparts when proving economic or competitive harm, and one of the two EC investigations has resulted in a “Statement of Objections” which, as this Interactive Week story says, often leads to an adverse opinion against a company.

Web firms scramble to meet privacy deadline

The Gramm-Leach-Billey Act goes into effect this Sunday July 8, and a few thousand U.S.-based Web sites could be in hot water for non-compliance with the act’s new disclosure terms. A financial reform measure, Gramm-Leach-Billey includes terms that address how companies collect and share non-public personal information with third parties, and requires companies to offer consumers an “opt-out” of passing personal information along to third parties. Few worthwhile sparks at TechXNY show

Author: JT Smith

Looking for truly innovative devices at this years’ TechXNY show was akin to searching for a needle in a haystack. As this San Jose Mercury story at the Chicago Tribune says, such shows are “packed with gee-whiz products we can really do without.” Among the few items that impressed the correspondents the most were software that transforms Motorola pagers into e-mail devices, Compaq’s ultralight, ultrathin Evo N200 laptop, and color laser printers priced for the consumer market.
