IBM recently updated their Linux Itanium developer kit. Release update notes: “The Developer Kit has been rebuilt to support glibc 2.2 and the latest releases from RedHat
(7.1) and TurboLinux (OS 7).”

Bloomberg: “Transmeta Corp., a start-up chipmaker that
competes with Intel Corp., reduced its second-quarter sales forecast by almost half as the Japanese
economy slows and computer makers there scale back purchases.”

Company, has announced that RTLinux and the RTLinux Development Kit are now
available for several PowerPC 860 evaluation boards. Stress tests of the boards
show worst case measured periodic jitter times of less than 14 microseconds.
Context switch times have been measured at four microseconds worst case.”

Information Week: “Legislators on Capitol Hill continue to push for improved
online privacy for consumers, but many federal agency
Web sites are setting a bad example.

At least 23 agency sites still have more than 300 cookies,
one year after the Office of Management and Budget
restricted the use of tracking technologies on public
government sites. Those are the findings of a study
compiled from the reports of 51 inspectors general–part
of a mandate from Congress that arose after the General
Accounting Office reported last October that at least 13
agencies were using cookies.”

Network World Fusion has news of the BladeFrame server, due this fall from Egenera: “Egenera’s BladeFrame consists of a rack-mount enclosure that contains up to 96
servers or blades. Each blade has two or four Intel Xeon processors and is
manageable from a browser or command line interface egenera provides. Each processor runs Linux, although the company claims it will support other
operating systems in the future.”

IDG: “Oracle Corp. Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer Larry Ellison touted Wednesday the
clustering feature of the company’s new Oracle 9i
database, saying it allows users to increase
performance and reduce cost by adding additional
computers. But he shied away from mentioning the
additional charge for the feature, known as Real
Application Clusters.”
