And the geeks shall inherit the earth

Author: JT Smith

From LinuxPlanet: “If Windows XP, which some would have us believe is the Linux
killer (the same people, I presume, that predicted Microsoft Bob would be the future of software interfaces), is to be based on
this not-so-compatable NT OS, then where does that leave the poor schmucks like me who do not buy a new computer
every year and might have something a little stale in the hardware department? How does the upgrade path go then?

Or, if XP is more inclusive, will it be inheriting the same problems the Win95/98 OSes had?

Something, I think, is going to give.”

Jargon file 4.3.0 released

Author: JT Smith

Eric S. Raymond writes: “I have released a new Web version of the Jargon File, available at
http://www.tuxedo.org/jargon/>.This version 4.3.0 is intended specifically to recognize and honor the
wonderfully insane hackers of the Bergen Linux User’s Group in Bergen,
Norway. In perpetrating the world’s first implementation of RFC1149
(“A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers”)
they have pulled off what may just be the funniest, cleverest hack of
the last fifteen years.

Gentlemen, I salute you. You have been added to Appendix A as the
latest in a string of classic examples of the hack as art form.”

UCITA in Oregon: A status report

Author: JT Smith

From Linux Today: “With the adoption of UCITA as law in the United States apparently having dropped out of sight & without
resolution, I thought the following account of a hearing on this proposed law would be of interest. This
hearing of the Judiciary Commitee of the state of Oregon House of Representatives took place on 18 April,
2001 at the state Capitol building, from 3:40p to 5:00p.”

May Day ‘hacking’ threat fails to materialise

Author: JT Smith

ZDNet UK: “Police and computer security experts report that fears that the
city of London would fall to anti-capitalist computer hackers
have so far proved unfounded.

In the last few weeks a number of computer security firms
have warned that politically motivated hackers may time
attacks on corporation with 1 May street demonstrations
against global capitalism. However, experts say that, so far,
online demonstrators have failed to materialise.”

Linuxgram is reporting that the Turbolinux-Linuxcare merger has collapsed, with the news announced internally Monday.

“The merger’s failure is going to cost Linuxcare a ‘significant reduction in staff,’ according to its CEO Art Tyde.

further ‘analysis’ of its evolving business plan to scale back.”

Alternative software

Author: JT Smith

Is the company budget quaking with fear as Windows and Office XP loom on the horizon? There’s nothing to worry about, says John Dvorak in an article at Forbes (via Yahoo). Why put up with expensive software when plenty of free or lower-cost alternatives exist. “The savings a large corporation would make if it bought
10,000 white box machines running StarOffice on Linux could easily be $200 a machine or more, depending on the license agreements.”
